Olympic Sculpture Park

Sunday, January 28, 2007 by Bobby

I went to the new Seattle Art Museum Olympic Sculpture Park today and I thought it was pretty impressive.

The art itself is secondary to its location and view. It is amazing how they transformed an area that was crappy no less than two years ago.

Built above a busy street and even busier railroad crossing, the park re-links lower Queen Anne and Seattle Center to Elliot Bay. It will help make Seattle great.

It makes me wonder what benefits the city could reap with burying the viaduct and allowing the rest of the city to pull down to the waterfront. We have all this separation and it's all due to the trains and the viaduct being these big, dangerous obstacles. Imagine walking up the street from the ferry to Pike Place market or walking from Safeco to Ivar's. I think a tunnel is worth considering as an option--to a certain extent. It may not be worth braking the bank and robbing other transportation problems of funds for, but it would be worth paying a little more for the all the added benefits it could bring.

The coolest piece, I found, was Nuekom Vivarium. It's a fallen log that has been moved into a greenhouse to mimic the forest canopy with sprinklers for rain. It shows the diversity of life that lives on and around decaying logs. It was really fascinating.

Another great feature of the park is the beach where Myrtle Edwards park merges in. To get to the beach you can either go down a sky-bridge or walk around through the boardwalk. All the rocks down at the edge have all been cleaned out and all the litter and muck has been removed. Once at the beach many people make their own sculptures out of balancing drift wood. Tons of kids and adults were stacking up wood and rocks on their own piles or added on to others' creations.

The one drawback to the park is that you aren't allowed to touch the art because the sculptures are not made for that. This will be difficult seeing these are massive sculptures that you walk in and out of, definitely a perfect place for kids to run around in--and who could blame them.

This piece, "Wake", has signs all around it warning people and kids to not touch. I read an article in the Saturday P-I that they have already had to power wash the metal sculptures due to hand prints and footprints. This was not the best way to create such a sculpture.

The park is definitely recommended the next time we have weather like this weekend, it's been nice to finally get outside.

Romarville...in HD?

by Bobby

I'm listening to my best friend Softy on the radio (yes Sean, I too have other friends) and he just informed me of a huge new secret...video boards were installed in Hec Ed this week!!!!!

I don't have any pics or anything, mostly because I am writing this on my phone, but this is some big news that I had to pass on to all!

The Brief Safe

So I heard about this new kind of safe on the radio and I went to the website to check it out. It could be helpful to stash away your tax refund.

Enter the "Brief Safe"

Funny that it is made by Shomer-Tec.

... the United States got lucky.

Cosmos 954, a Soviet Radar Ocean Reconnaissance Satellite with an onboard nuclear reactor, burnt up in the Earth's atmosphere. As an added bonus, it landed in Canada, spewing radioactive fuel.

Also on that day, Bobby was born. So I guess you could call it wash.

Happy B-Day, Bobbo!! May God not play cruel tricks on you this year.

Yawn...

Man Bendermenz has been a snooze lately.

Thanks to all of you who I texted on Friday and bailed out. Anyhow, Brian and I had a good time over at the Clearwater Casino Saturday night. Brian went home a winner. I think I lost around $85 all said and done.

It was pretty easy and fun to get there, by the way. You walk-on the Bainbridge ferry from Seattle and from there you take a five-minute, free shuttle to the Casino. On the way back the ferry is free and you are home.

But I can understand why some of you wouldn't want to do that. Nothing fun is that convenient. Maybe next time.

life at a second-rate law school

Saturday, January 20, 2007 by Brian

Today I was walking on campus, and through the trees I could two men walking and holding hands. While this would have sent Linecutter into convulsions, I simply thought "huh. you don't see that every day." Went I got closer, I saw it was two women.

Great story. Next time I'll tell about when Smokin' brought his laptop onto the porch and thought the beds around him were empty.

Eddie Murphy's Dream Girl

Friday, January 19, 2007 by abw

Those of you who have seen Raw (probably everyone) will remember that Eddie Murpy wants to meet a woman who knows nothing of his millions and who wouldn't take up the lifestyles of the rich and famous as soon as he married her. He figured only an African tribal woman would fit the bill. Well, she's not African, but this chick ought to do...

She speaks in grunts, crawls instead of walking —and now she wants to go back to live in the jungle. This Cambodian jungle girl was found last week 18 years after she went missing as a little girl. Filthy and naked when she was discovered, with long matted hair and a furtive, hunted expression, she was caught stealing food left under a tree by a villager.

The end or the begining of professional soccer in the US?

Thursday, January 11, 2007 by Frodo

David Bekham has recently left Spain for the LA Galaxy, yeah I know you are all thinking "the US has a professional soccer league?" Well we have had one for more than 10 years, and yet I bet you can count on one hand the number of times the PI or Seattle Times has covered the league. Well that could be because we don't have a team (there are only 13 teams) and our nearest team is LA or Real Salt Lake. If I could think of two cities in the US that are close but near polar opposites of Seattle those would be the ones. But I digress...

Is Bekham's move to the US similar to Pele's move to New York when we last had a professional soccer league? Will he draw a little bit of attention, spawn a reality show, divorce Posh Spice and then leave as MLS (thats Major League Soccer) dies a second death? Or will Bekham help promote the league and retire in five years with a healthy MLS and 20 teams spread between its two divisions?

Lets have a little Bendermenz poll here...death or birth of major league soccer in the US.

pissing me off

Tuesday, January 09, 2007 by Brian

I'm not always the friendliest guy. No duh. I call Prewett out on his refusal to de-closet himself all the time, which probably isn't nice. He should be able to do it on his own terms. But at least I don't isolate myself.

The iPod is really pissing me off. Not just because it allows a shitty computer company to remain viable for a few more years, but because of what it allows people to do. Every day I walk into my building seeing people wearing iPods as they walk around, being oblivious to everyone else, no interaction. "No, don't talk to me. I'm listening to shitty music." I worry that we are becoming too isolated from others. You go home, you don't see people. you talk on IM and you watch TV. You sit around and think about how shitty stuff is. Now when you are out in public, you can shut yourself off from the world. We have more information now than ever, but people can't communicate it. There's no debate; just arguing.

Maybe this is a stupid, poorly written rant, but does it piss anyone else off?

I figured out why I've been so boring and nerdy.

Monday, January 08, 2007 by Bobby

Today when I relaxed in front of the TV tonight to watch the College Football Championship, I realized I watch too much TV. I am lazy and bored more often. It has been mostly due to watching sports, mostly football. I think I am going to go cold turkey for awhile (after football), that means no NBA or baseball for me.

AH FUCK!

Husky Basketball!

Which yes, Scott and Jeremy, is something that I still do care about even though I have missed the two biggest home games of the season.

So after Huskies and Seahawks...That's it! ESPN will never be my start page ever again!

If this makes me a pussy, then so be it. Probably going to take up jogging!...

Not a chance.

.........

By the way--while I am still watching sports--holy shit, how do they let Pac-10 officials do important games like the national championship?

I recorded the game and I'm still in the first half and they've already fucked up 27 times. They almost fucked up the coin-toss. I didn't even know that they were Pac-10 officials till into the 1st quarter, but when I saw that he almost forgot that Florida called tails and the awkward introduction of John McCain (John McCain already looked awkward without it), I thought, "who are these jokers?" When they announced who they were, I was like, "Oh, well that answers it."

..........

Hey Brian!

Happy Birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday Mr. Brian, happy birthday to you!!!

Let's grab a beer tomorrow. I will be in Seattle earlier to meet with the Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Board to go over Thursday's oral boards. It should be neat and sweet seeing this will be my second time.

I'll meet up with you right after that.

RDK Jr. Forever! Great brother!! Face guy.

Prewett, weren't you his big bro?

A Rebuttal to The Worldwide Leader...

by Colby

Since I'm not in Seattle to bask in the afterglow of the Seahawks win over the Cowboys, I wanted to at least point out a few things about the coverage of the game by ESPN (the self-proclaimed "Worldwide Leader in Sports").

  • The Cowboys (read: Tony Romo) lost the game, the Seahawks didn't win it.
    • Garbage. If Tatupu doesn't recover the ball for a safety, the Seahawks don't win. If Tatupu doesn't make the stop on the 2 to prevent the first down, the Seahawks don't win. If Stevens doesn't catch two TD's on beautifully thrown balls from Hasselbeck, the Seahawks don't win. Enough with this "The Cowboys lost the game!" garbage. The Seahawks forced the Cowboys to kick a field goal, which they couldn't do. The Seahawks won the game. Credit them with it.
  • Parcells is out after this year, along with TO, OT, Tony Romo, Tony Roma and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders
    • Wait a second, didn't the Seahawks just win the game? Why the hell are we talking about what the Cowboys are doing in the offseason? Shouldn't we be talking about the Seahawks and Bears in the NFC Conference Semifinal game?

  • Tony Romo is a more tragic figure than MacBeth
    • I won't shed any tears for Tony Romo. Ever since he started his first game (a game the Cowboys lost), everybody's absolutely loved everything that he's done. That it came against the defensive juggernauts of Chicago, Baltimore, New England, the '91 Washington Huskies mediocre pass defenses of Indianapolis, New York Giants, Tampa Bay and Arizona. Oh yeah, don't forget that he was the holder for the Cowboys on field goals last year as well. He screwed up. Kind of like Bill Buckner. Oh yeah, let's not forget that he's now dating Carrie Underwood. Think he could have dated her if he wasn't the starter for America's Team? Speaking of the Cowboys being America's Team....

  • The Cowboys are "America's Team."
    • Anybody have any reason why they're America's Team? Is it because they're the best team in the league? No. Is it because they have the best players in the league? No. Is it because they've won multiple Super Bowls recently? No. I don't get it. People who root for the Cowboys probably also root for the (insert most recent World Series champ here), (insert World Cup champion soccer team here), (insert NHL champion here), Notre Dame and the Kansas City Royals.
There. I feel much better. There definitely is an East Coast Media Bias. I know it. I've seen it, and I'll never believe anything differently. The only way to buck it is for anybody from Seattle to win a championship. Anybody.

Oh. My. God.
You know girls gone wild? There's a guys gone wild. Order now and save 5 dollars on all three new titles!!

This was advertised during an episode of South Park. Either a lot more women watch the show than I thought, or a lot of the viewers are gay. Needless to say, I'll be checking the mail to see what jason orders in the next few weeks.
